Remembering EMILY SHANE....http://www.emilyshane.org/

The family of Emily Shane and others attended a Hanukkah ceremony Wednesday, the second night of the Jewish holiday, at which a menorah was lit in memory of the young Malibu resident. The menorah stands at the spot where Emily was killed at age 13 in April 2010, on the shoulder of Pacific Coast Highway near the Heathercliff Road/Emily Shane Way intersection.

The ceremony was led by Rabbi Levi Cunin of Chabad of Malibu. Emily's father Michel lit the menorah and each person held a lit candle while they sang the Hanukkah prayers.

Cunin said the candle represents a human, with the fire being the soul and the wick being the body. The use of a candle to light other candles is the symbolism of eternal life.

"The time of life is very much like a candle," Cunin said. "We go through a certain amount of years, and during that time, we have the ability with one candle to light up a bunch of other candles. And when that candles leaves, all the other candles that it gives [light to] are still part of that light that it came into the world with."

He said, "Emily's light is alive ... may her light continue to shine with great abundance."
